Keanu Reeves – Binge Watch

I’ve been on summer break from work for 2 weeks now and while these past 2 weeks have been pretty busy (mainly with lots of appointments that I didn’t have time for during the school year) I have started to have some time to just watch tv and not do anything. In the past 4 days I have had an unintentional (or maybe intentional) Keanu Reeves marathon. I watched John Wick and John Wick Chapter 2 and all 3 Matrix movies. This led me to want to write a post about how much I love Keanu Reeves!

So I haven’t seen all his movies, but I’ve seen a good amount. I’ve rounded up just a few of his most memorable performances for me. There are for sure others, but I didn’t want the list to get too long.

My love for Keanu Reeves began when I was in elementary school and my parents let me watch the movie Speed with them. To this day, it is one of my favorite movies. I think it’s a fantastic movie and Keanu Reeves is so good (and hot) in it. Insert fire emoji. If you don’t know the premise of Speed, Keanu plays an LAPD officer (I think he’s on the SWAT team? I don’t quite remember) and after getting on the bad side of a bad guy he ends up on a bus that has a bomb on it. Once activated, they have to keep the bus going at a certain speed (55 mph?) or else it will explode. Sandra Bullock stars with him in the movie and they are so good together. So good in fact that they starred in The Lake House together years later.

With my childhood crush on him, I recorded his Bill & Ted movies (yes, on VHS) back then. The movies are from before Speed. I haven’t watched the movies in years so I don’t remember all the details but I do know they time travel and they’re wanna-be rockstars who aren’t the brightest. I should probably figure out where I can watch the movies because they are going to make a new one!

Back in the Speed era, Keanu went on to star in A Walk in the Clouds. I used to love this movie and need to watch it again because it’s been a while. Keanu plays a guy who comes back from fighting in World War II to find his wife is leaving him. He gets a job as a chocolate salesman and meets a young woman who could use some help. She is unmarried and pregnant and afraid to go home to her family’s vineyard without a husband. He helps her out by pretending to be her husband and you can see where this is going.

The Matrix movies came out when I was in middle and high school. In high school, I remember the movies would come out around the time of my friend’s birthday so it became a thing to have her birthday involve seeing the movie at the theater and usually dinner or something. I just rewatched the trilogy this past week because I was on a Keanu Reeves kick after watching the first two John Wick movies (haven’t seen the 3rd but I think it’s still in theaters) . I hadn’t seen The Matrix in years and didn’t remember a lot of it. It’s crazy how when you look at special effects from 15 years ago that looked so epic back then and compare it to what we’re used to today, it seems so fake. Some of the fight scenes looked animated and like from a video game, but I remember it being a huge deal back then. The movies are still good, but I’m still not crazy about the ending.

And lastly, as I mentioned above I watched the first two John Wick movies this week. In John Wick, Keanu plays an ex-assassin who has a deadly reputation. After accidentally getting drawn back in to the criminal world, he exacts his revenge. The 2nd movie picks up where the first left off and I assume the 3rd begins where the 2nd left off.

While it seems like most of his movies in the past 20 years have been darker, action movies, he has sprinkled in some love stories and lighthearted comedies. He is a voice in the new Toy Story 4 movie and as mentioned above The Lakehouse, although that’s a little bit sad. But I was happy to see him reunited with Sandra Bullock in that movie. He also has a cameo in the Netflix movies, Always Be My Maybe, that I hear is funny.

Really, I just need the two of them to get together and live happily ever after! I love the chemistry they have together and apparently they have both admitted on talk shows recently that they had crushes on each other during the filming of Speed and didn’t tell each other! I recently read an article about how Keanu has had a lot of tragedy in his life (i.e. he and his longtime girlfriend had a stillborn baby girl; after breaking up but remaining close she was killed in a car accident). I read another article about some famous sportscaster or sportswriter now, met him years ago when he was working at a movie theater. He tried to slickly get Keanu’s autograph by asking him to sign some receipt or something that didn’t make sense. Later on, Keanu knocked on the movie theater office door and handed him an autograph and said he realized the kid probably wanted that. He just sounds like the nicest guy and as a fan, I want him to find some long lasting happiness!

Anyway, enough about my hopes for a movie star that I don’t know. Are you a Keanu Reeves fan? If so, what is your favorite movie of his?
