Once in a Lifetime by Suzanne Mattaboni was recently released and I was sent a copy! I haven’t gotten to read it yet, but it sounds really interesting so I wanted to take part in the blog tour for it.
In 1984, punk is rampant, Andy Warhol rules, and 20-year old Jess is sick of missing out on all the excitement. Setting her sights on an avant-garde study abroad program she can’t afford, her summer becomes a wild ride of edgy clubs, waitressing chaos, tequila-fueled adventures, and all the nostalgia that 1980s New Hope, PA has to offer.
Determined to become a glass mosaic artist and multimedia sensation, Jess has her heart set on a pricey study abroad program in London, the new wave capital of the world. She’s convinced this will help her mature creatively and kick-start the unsheltered life she’s been pining for, but first, she has to get there. To help her raise money for tuition, Jess’s buddies recruit her to waitress in New Hope, PA, a progressive riverside town known for upscale restaurants, galleries, alternative clubs, and residents of all persuasions. In the course of one summer there, she falls for a daredevil guitarist, becomes buds with a drag queen, gets into a love triangle involving the ex who tossed her off, is haunted by the emerging AIDS crisis, and tests not only her friendships but her own stubborn willpower. Jess has to survive the men in her life who are beginning to leave her as damaged as her cracked-glass mosaic art projects, and decide whether they’ll stand in the way of her dreams.
