Entering your forties can be an exciting time of your life. However, it’s also a time to reexamine your health, as the risk of health emergencies is higher. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the risk of chronic diseases, such as heart complications, stroke, and diabetes, increases as people age. Additionally, studies reveal that 44% of older millennials born between 1981 and 1988 live with chronic medical conditions, making it vital to keep a close eye on your health as you approach your forties. If you are already within this age range, here are some essential health tips to keep in mind.

  1. Adopt healthy habits for chronic pain

Chronic pain can be a significant problem for many people in their 40s and beyond and can impact their quality of life. It can occur due to various conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, and back pain. This condition, when left unchecked, can also lead to depression and constant anxiety. Mental health experts say when people deal with pain in the long term, it takes a toll on their psychological well-being.

Working with a healthcare provider to develop a comprehensive treatment plan to manage chronic pain is important. That may include physical therapy, pain medications, and other treatments. In addition to working with a healthcare provider, you can make lifestyle changes to manage your pain. Regular exercise can help reduce discomfort and improve physical function, while stress-reducing activities, such as yoga or meditation, can improve your overall well-being. Meanwhile, a healthy diet and avoiding processed foods and added sugars can reduce inflammation while improving pain symptoms. By taking an active role in managing chronic pain, you can improve your quality of life and reduce the impact of this condition on your daily activities.

  1. Get screened for cancer

As you grow older, screening for cancer at least twice a year becomes more crucial. One of these cancers you should be mindful of is colorectal cancer, which is a serious health concern that increases with age. According to medical research, the risk is higher at age forty-five. It is even more crucial if there is a family history of colorectal cancer. Screening for colorectal cancer is crucial in detecting the disease early when it is most treatable. The screening options include a fecal blood test, a stool DNA test, a flexible sigmoidoscopy, traditional colonoscopies, or a CT colonography. Indeed, your doctor can help determine which screening option is right for you based on specific individual risk factors. Screening for colorectal cancer is especially important because the disease often develops silently and without symptoms. Therefore, remember not to hesitate to schedule a screening if you are in your forties. Early detection and treatment can help save your life.

  1. Stay hydrated

Did you know that your body becomes less efficient at retaining water as you enter your forties? Staying hydrated is important for overall health and becomes even more critical in your forties. Less water greatly increases your risk of dehydration and can cause various health problems, such as constipation, kidney stones, and urinary tract infections. To stay hydrated, aim to drink at least eight glasses of water daily and avoid drinks high in sugar and caffeine. In addition to drinking plenty of water, there are other ways to stay hydrated. These include eating foods high in water, such as fruits and vegetables.

Meanwhile, incorporating physical activity into your routine can help you stay hydrated, as exercise automatically increases fluid needs. Finally, be mindful of the climate and environment because hot weather and high altitude can expose you to dehydration, making it essential to take good care of yourself. By being proactive about hydration, you can maintain good health and reduce your risk of dehydration-related health problems.
