9 Tools Every Creative Should Have in Their Craft Room

If you’re a creative soul, who loves nothing more than to while away the hours knitting socks, cheating greetings cards and upcycling our old stuff, then you probably have a craft room, right? But if you don’t have all of the following tools in your craft space, you are definitely missing a trick!

1) The Glorious Cutting Mat

A cutting mat is about as basic a requirement as you can get for any crafting room. It enables you to cut out images for collages or paper for greeting cards, without you damaging your tables and surfaces, but more than that, it also features grind lines, so your cutting is always the right size, and as straight as you need it to be.

2) Overlock Serger Machine (The Secret to Professional-Looking Edges)

If you love sewing, you already know how a simple project can go from “meh” to “wow” with neat edges. Say howdy to the overlock serger machine—like the superhero sidekick to your regular sewing machine. Think of it as the quiet friend who steps in and cleans up all your messy threads, ensuring your seams look crisp and tidy. No more fraying fabric or questionable hemlines. Yes, it’s an investment, but once you see how it transforms your sewing projects, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it.

3) A Glue Gun That Means Business

Hot glue guns are the magical wands of the crafting kingdom. Gone are the days of gloppy white glue that takes forever to dry (and might fuse your fingers together). A decent glue gun helps you attach, decorate, and fix things in seconds. From adding rhinestones to a handbag to building a mini cardboard metropolis, a glue gun can do it all. Just keep a bowl of ice water nearby if you’re prone to scorching your fingertips—because those glue strings can get you when you least expect it.

4) Scissors That Cut Like Butter

We all have that one pair of scissors that’s so dull it might as well be a butter knife. Stop punishing yourself! Invest in a good pair of scissors specifically for fabric and another for paper. Label them “fabric” and “paper” if you must, because using the same scissors for everything is akin to using a fine painting brush to mop the floor. Treat your scissors with respect, and they’ll reward you with smooth, effortless cuts.

5) Paintbrushes & Palettes: Your Inner Picasso Awaits

Whether you’re painting a canvas or adding decorative flourishes to a piece of furniture, a decent set of paintbrushes is essential. Fine tip brushes for delicate detail work, flat brushes for broader strokes, and fan brushes for blending—your arsenal should be versatile. If you have a habit of forgetting to wash your brushes before the paint dries, consider investing in a few backups (or an alarm on your phone that says, “Wash your brushes, you maniac!”). And don’t forget a sturdy palette that can handle all your abstract color mixing experiments.

6) A Rainbow of Pens, Markers, and Pencils

For those days you feel like doodling, lettering, or journaling, a variety of writing tools is a must. Brush pens, fine liners, water-based markers—you name it. Keep them organized by color or size if you’re feeling fancy, or just throw them in a giant cup labeled “My Precious.” They’re guaranteed to spark creativity and can sometimes double as a stress reliever when you’re scribbling away those existential crises.

7) Let There Be Light: Good Lighting Is Non-Negotiable

Ever tried to color-match in bad lighting? It can lead to some… interesting outcomes (hello, mismatched thread color fiasco!). A bright overhead light or a dedicated desk lamp can save you the agony of discovering the next morning that your carefully chosen emerald green is actually forest green. Bonus points if you install an adjustable lamp for those late-night crafting sessions when you want to see every meticulous detail of your project—no flashlight required.

8) The “Tetris Approach” to Storage Solutions

A craft room without decent storage is like a yarn ball that’s been mauled by a kitten—total chaos. Invest in shelves, bins, baskets, and pegboards to keep your supplies visible yet organized. Pegboards are the unsung heroes of craft organization. Hang scissors, rulers, paint tubes, washi tape—heck, you can even hang your half-finished projects if you’re feeling adventurous. The key is to make your supplies easy to reach, so you don’t spend half your craft time rummaging through mystery boxes labeled “random stuff.”

9) A Comfy Chair (For When Creativity Takes Over)

We all know just how absorbing a craft can be, so we can often find ourselves spending hours in the craft room working on our latest piece, and that is why a comfy crafting chair is so important. A seat that is ergonomic, cushioned and cute, is a must for any craft room because no one wants a bad back!
