Book Review: Rock Bottom Girl

If Lucy Score writes it, I will read it. I’m still working my way through her backlist and I haven’t started her newest book yet but I own it. My latest read of hers is Rock Bottom Girl.

The novel is a dual POV and follows Marley Cicero and Jake Weston. After losing her job and being dumped by her boyfriend, Marley heads back to her hometown in Pennsylvania to live with her parents temporarily. Until she can find a new job/career idea she has been hired by her old high school to be one of the gym teachers and the head coach for the girls’ soccer team until the holidays. Jake, a guy she had a crush on back in high school, is a history teacher and the cross country coach. Marley has never taught before and she was not a star soccer player 20+ years ago either. If she thought this was rock bottom, she’d be wrong because her high school enemy now lives next door to her parents with her husband who happens to be Marley’s high school boyfriend.

When Marley finds herself in a sticky situation, Jake helps her out, but it leads everyone to believe they’re a couple. The two continue their fake dating situation in a way to benefit them both. Jake will teach Marley more teaching and coaching tips and strategies. Jake will learn how to be in a relationship and have a girlfriend since he’s never been in a real relationship before. Marley will learn more teaching and coaching tips and tricks from Jake. But will all that time they spend together pretending to be a couple lead them to have real feelings for each other?

I loved this book and loved Marley and Jake. It was so fun to watch them and their relationship grow. I also loved the relationship between Marley and the girls on the soccer team. It was a really rough beginning, but eventually they all become inseparable and they show a lot of respect to their coach. It’s just such a feel good book with the close relationships amongst the characters and the growth of the girls on the team.

My only critique of the book is that Marley’s stubbornness got annoying at times. I realize it’s part of the story or else there wouldn’t be a conflict or a real chance for Marley to learn and grow. But, it stretched out a little longer than I would’ve preferred so that part wasn’t my favorite. Overall, I loved the book and miss Marley and Jake already!

Read this if you want a spicy small town romcom with the fake dating trope.
