Book Review: Story of My Life

If Lucy Score writes it, I will read it. I’ve probably said that before. Come to think of it, I might have even said it in my recent post when I reviewed Rock Bottom Girl as I make my way through her backlist. Anyway, last week I read her latest novel and first book in her new series, Story of My Life, and it should come as no surprise that I loved it! Side note: how pretty are these sprayed/stenciled edges!

The novel is the classic grumpy sunshine romcom. It follows romcom author Hazel Hart and small town contractor, Campbell Bishop. Two years after Hazel’s divorce, she is a serious slump creatively and in life. When she realizes that per the terms of her divorce settlement she only has a few days before she is being kicked out of her New York City apartment, it is the wake-up call she needed. Remembering an old newspaper article she had clipped of a small town in Pennsylvania called Story Lake, she does an internet search and finds the house that was featured and renovated in the article by the Bishop Brothers, is for sale. Not only is it for sale, but it is being auctioned online. Hazel takes the leap and buys the house since she needs a new place to live anyway!

With her best friend and agent, Zoey, in tow they head to Story Lake – a quirky small town that has seen better days. The house too is a little more run-down than pictures online suggested as well. Campbell is one of the first people she meets in town and he would like nothing more than for this city girl to head back to the city. But when she hires his family’s business to renovate the house, they’ll have to see a lot more of each other. It doesn’t take long before the two give in to their attraction for one another, but keep reminding each other that neither wants a relationship and this is just a no-strings attached arrangement out of pure convenience and to give Hazel inspiration for her book. They wouldn’t want anybody in their gossipy small town to think they were dating after all!

I loved this book and the whole cast of characters including the teenage wonder kid/mayor, Darius. I loved Hazel and Cam. They were so funny and perfect together. I loved how Cam acts all grumpy, but is actually such a softie on the inside. I also really liked following Hazel’s journey of finding herself and becoming inspired to write again.

The small town and brothers reminds me of her infamous Knockemout series that I love so much. The family love, friendships, and spice is similar in both series, but the Story Lake series is definitely more romcom whereas Knockemout is more contemporary romance. I highly recommend both though!

I can’t wait for book 2 about Cam’s brother, Gage, and Hazel’s best friend, Zoey!

Read this if you want a spicy small town romcom with the grumpy sunshine trope.
