Book Review: Our Perfect Storm

While I was in Kent Island, I read the bulk of Our Perfect Storm by Carley Fortune. It is her latest book and one of my favorites of hers.

The book follows best friends Francesca “Frankie” Gardiner and George Saint James. They have been best friends since they met at 8 years old when George moved in with his grandmother who lived in the Big House next door to Frankie and her family. They became instant best friends and inseparable. Even when they turned 18 they both moved to Toronto together and were roommates. Fast forward to present day when they are both 30. Frankie is a chef who currently works for a food influencer creating recipes and George is an environmental journalist. They are still best friends, but have not seen each other much and things have been strained ever since Frankie got engaged to her older boyfriend, Nate, whom she has been dating for less than a year. The novel begins at the wedding festivities for Frankie and her fiancé and Frankie is worried George won’t show up. But he does show up and nothing makes her happier. But then the next day, the day before the wedding, Frankie wakes up to a note from Nate breaking things off.

After 2 months of living back with her parents, being sad/depressed, wondering the reason Nate broke up with her right before their wedding, George comes home from working abroad and offers to go on an adventure with her – to Tofino on her honeymoon that Nate said via friends that she should still go on. Frankie doesn’t even hesitate because a trip away with George is just what she wants.

We follow Frankie and George during their time in Tofino and read as Frankie rediscovers herself and her future. We also follow along during chapters of Frankie and George’s past together and finding their way back to one another in the present after their distance the past few years of their adult lives and coming to terms with their feelings for one another.

I loved this book and could not put it down. I loved both Frankie and George and their friendship was so special and beautiful. There is a third act breakup which I’m not always a fan of and even though I would’ve preferred it not happen in this book I can see how it helped the story and made the ending stronger. Nonetheless, I think Frankie and George are one of my favorite couples ever.
