Apple Pie + Cutouts & Braided Lattice

Happy Thursday! I hope your week’s been going well. I’ve been really busy, but I’m glad it’s already Thursday. I have a quick post for you today. Continuing with my pie theme from my last food post (see my Coconut Cream Pie post), I’m sharing an apple pie today. I’ve shared an apple pie covered in leaf cutouts on here before and one with a lattice top which is why this post will be short and sweet since I’m not going to cover the whole process of making an apple pie. Just click (here) for one of my previous posts on apple pie. The apple pie I’m sharing today has…

    Coconut Cream Pie

Are you pie lover? I’m not a huge sweets/dessert person but I do like desserts. I just don’t have a huge sweet tooth so when I do eat dessert it’s not a ton of it. That being said, my favorite pie is Coconut Cream Pie. It’s so good! I don’t find it to be too sweet and I love the creaminess of it. First off, if you’re wondering what the difference is between a coconut cream pie and a coconut custard pie – I looked it up. Custard pies have the filling baked in the crust and cream pies are filled after the pie crust has baked. I have made…

    Blueberry Pie

Do you remember the tv show “Pushing Daisies”? The show was so good, but sadly cut short like so many shows during that writers strike that happened back about 10 years ago. Anyway, I loved the show and the main character had a pie shop. The pie’s always looked so good and made me crave pies all the time! My pies don’t look as perfect as the ones on “Pushing Daisies”, but that doesn’t stop me from making these delicious desserts. The pie I’m sharing with you today is a Blueberry Pie. So easy to make and you know I like easy recipes. First, I wash some fresh blueberries. Dry…

    Mixed Berry Slab Pie

Tomorrow is 4th of July so of course I had to create something to share on the blog! A few weeks ago I had a family bbq so I thought it was the perfect chance to try making a mixed berry slab pie. Perfect for a bbq and start of summer and a great dessert to share for a July 4th idea. I used Martha Stewart’s slab pie recipe as a basis but I changed a few things. To make this July 4th friendly I decided to use blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. After washing the berries I mixed them with the sugar, cornstarch, heavy cream, lemon juice mix that Martha Stewart…

    Apple Pie + Leaf Cutouts

Is there anything more Thanksgiving than apple pie? Well, besides turkey obviously. And maybe pumpkin and sweet potato pie, but apple is more up my alley, plus apple is pretty much an American staple. I’ve been making apple pie for years now. Last year I started making the lattice tops instead of simply covering the entire top with the top crust. This year, I really wanted to make the leaf cutouts to cover the top of the pie. So on my last trip to the mall I stopped in Williams-Sonoma and bought a fall set of pie cutters. I made my apple pie as usual using store bought dough, slicing…

    Apple & Peach Crostata

Crostata’s are a dessert that I really enjoy making. If you’ve never heard of a crostata before, it’s essentially an open-faced pie. You can make yours with any kind of filling you want. For the one I’m sharing today I used apples and peaches – perfect for the upcoming summer season and on/off spring days we’re having now. First, peel and cut your fruit. Then, I mix the fruit with brown sugar, flour, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. The lemon juice is to help the fruit from browning. After giving the filling a good mix,  I brush egg wash onto pie crust dough and then carefully pour/spoon the fruit into the…

    Lattice Apple Pie

Apple pie is one of my favorite pies. It’s seen more as a fall dessert, but who says you can only make it in the fall? You can buy apples all year long, so why not make an apple pie in the spring and summer? I’ve eaten apple pies throughout my life, whether it be homemade or the store bought, frozen kind. It was just this year that I decided I wanted to make a lattice apple pie though like those pretty ones you always see pictures of. Here’s what I did! Slice some apples and toss them with cinnamon, flour, and lemon juice. The lemon juice is to keep…
