Galavant

Galavant is described as a “comedy, musical, fairytale” and that’s exactly what it is. For months, I’d been seeing the ads on TV for this “comedy extravaganza” that would last 4 weeks so I was intrigued to say the least. As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a fan of musicals so that made me even more interested. I know some people are really anti-musicals so I assume those who are would not be as interested.

As we’re now halfway through the series (season 1?) I thought I’d share my thoughts on the show. Galavant isn’t your typical show by any means, which I think is part of its appeal. It’s full of puns, witty lines, and pokes fun at the whole notion of fairytales, knights in shining armor, etc. The hero, Galavant, isn’t your typical hero and neither is his “love” aka the present queen who after being kidnapped by the king actually chooses to marry the king for money and power over love. Seeing as how I love musicals, I don’t mind that they break out into song during the show, but as with the theme of the show, these aren’t your typical songs. They are full of humor – some witty, some slapstick. They’re also quite catchy as I always feel the urge to sing out the word/name “Galavant” like they do in the song.

Galavant

So what do I think of the show? I’m a fan! I love everything about it and I even find myself laughing out loud at some of it. I feel that you have to be in the right mindset to enjoy the show though because if you aren’t a fan of musical or musical comedy or just plain funny/ridiculousness then you might think it’s stupid. But that’s exactly what I find so funny about it – it’s ridiculousness! Some people I know that don’t like musicals often say “It’s so unrealistic to just break into song”. Well, I think it’s entertaining and come on, you know what you’re getting into when you’re watching a musical so “realistic” really doesn’t apply. All in all, I really enjoy the show. It’s funny and the cast is great. Joshua Sasse as Galavant is ever so handsome and charming and dashing and any other swoon worthy words you can think of to describe him (Hello, new celeb crush!). Timothy Omundson is adorably oblivious as the king and I really like Karen David as Isabella. They’ve also had some great guest stars ranging from John Stamos (hilarious jousting scene with him and Sasse) and Hugh Bonneville (who I didn’t recognize at first as the pirate with no ship).

There are 2 more weeks of the show left, including tonight, and I’m crossing my fingers that ABC will bring it back! I’d really love to see the show continue as I find it so entertaining!
