Star Wars Pancakes

I need to preface this post by saying the pancakes did not turn out too hot. In the end, they looked okay, but not great. About a month ago when I was having a browse on the Williams Sonoma website, I saw they had Star Wars pancake molds. They looked so fun and who wouldn’t want to eat a pancake in the shape of Yoda or a storm trooper? So I bought the kid and it came with a storm trooper, yoda, R2D2, and Darth Vader.

I used my trusty Aunt Jemima pancake mix and started making them. So like I said they didn’t end up that great looking so this post is not a “look at how awesome these turned out, you should make them too!” post. Instead, I’m sharing how things went wrong and what I learned from making these the first time around.

The molds are big. Like, bigger than a pancake I would normally make so it took longer than anticipated to ladle the batter in to the mold on the pan. This also resulted in pretty think pancakes. The other difficulty I encountered was lifting the mold too soon. This was tricky. You lay the mold down on your pan and then pour the batter in. You’re not supposed to remove the mold until you’re ready to flip the pancake over. Here’s the problem – I normally know when to flip a pancake by lifting it up a little and checking how brown the bottom is. However, you can’t check the bottom of the pancake when you have the mold still sitting there. I tried removing the mold to check and the pancake was not set yet so it just started oozing everywhere and losing its shape!

There was a lot of trial and error and it wasn’t easy, but I think they turned out fairly decent considering how hard it was. Well except for Yoda being almost burnt!
