Book Review: The Mating Game

Two years ago I read and loved the paranormal romcom The Fake Mate by Lana Ferguson so I was excited to learn she was writing a sequel about Noah’s grumpy cousin, Hunter, a ski lodge owner. The Mating Game follows Hunter and contractor, Tess, and was such a fun read!

In the novel, Hunter’s aunt hires Tess and her brothers to come out to their ski lodge in Colorado and fix it up because it has seen better days. Hunter isn’t too keen on the idea because he doesn’t want to change much due to personal/sentimental attachments to the place he grew up in. Tess needs this renovation to go well because she genuinely wants to help keep Hunter’s family business alive, but because she’s trying to land a deal with HGTV that she needs to help pay for her dad’s medical expenses. It’s a little hard to do when Hunter is a grump about working on the place. And it’s also a little hard to do when you’ve lived your whole life believing you’re a beta (regular human) only to learn that due to late presentation you’re actually a shifter. Not only a shifter, but an omega. And Hunter is also a shifter – an alpha. Omegas and alphas are naturally drawn to each other.

We follow the two as they learn to work together to fix up the ski lodge and Hunter helps Tess adjust to her new designation and you know do things like help her manage her heat….

This was a really fun read and I loved Hunter and Tess. I do wish there was a little more of Hunter teaching Tess different things about being a shifter. It was fun to watch him teach her how to shift, but then the majority of the rest of it was about her heat, which was fun obviously but I wish there was more of the other stuff!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I’m wondering if we’ll get another book about Tess’s best friend, Ada, because we know she is also a shifter who went through a difficult relationship/breakup in the past. The epilogue briefly mentions that Ada was mated, so I wonder if we’ll get her story?!

Read this if you want a spicy paranormal romcom with the grumpy sunshine and forced proximity tropes.
