I finally got to see Into the Woods yesterday after last week’s fail. I heard mixed reviews from people I know about the movie. Some people said they loved it, others said they thought it was awful, while others liked it but thought it was a little long. I haven’t looked too much into the film critics’ reviews, but from the little I heard on TV I heard that it was critically acclaimed and getting Oscar buzz. That mixed with the star filled cast, I just had to see it for myself. So here are my brief thoughts on the movie.
I’ve never seen the musical, so I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect. However, I am a fan of musicals and fairy tales so it seemed like a win-win for me! I missed the first two or three minutes of the movie (I got to the theater 15 minutes early and had my ticket already but I was hungry and really craving popcorn and of course there were only 2 people working the concession stand and I’m not kidding 15 people ahead of me in my line). Anywayyyy, I missed the previews (upsetting since I love previews) and the first 2 minutes of the movie, but did sit down during the opening song.
Honestly….I really enjoyed the movie! I thought the acting was great and the songs were good too. I could’ve done with the songs being a tad bit shorter – I felt some dragged on a little too long, but overall I loved it. I love the interpretation of the fairy tales and there are definitely some little funny moments. There are a lot of storylines going on and they all interconnect some way or another so I can see how the movie might be confusing for some. I’m usually pretty good at paying attention to small details and keeping up with storylines so I did not find it confusing in the slightest.
If you’re looking for the traditional stories of your beloved fairytale characters, you’re not going to find it here. But, if you’re open to a different interpretation and like musicals then I highly recommend Into the Woods!
