Always, always follow the advice of a doctor, if not the one who first offers advice, another one, or a specialist more suited to the problem. Many people have unfortunately suffered needlessly because of trying unproven homeopathic or alternative remedies based on verbal recommendations or forum posts alone, and that’s not great. Organizations like the Mayo Clinic, National Institutes of Health, or other respected medical associations have reputations to protect and standards to maintain that random wellness blogs simply don’t have, and a Reddit post won’t ever be accountable for.
That’s because these institutions employ real experts who understand how to properly explain and document evidence and spot issues in research that might fool people reading studies for the first time. They also update their recommendations when new evidence comes to light as they should, never sticking to outdated information because it supports a particular product or philosophy they’re trying to promote.
Have A Clear Purpose
Know exactly what you’re trying to achieve and why you think a particular approach might help with that specific goal, and limits the temptation to jumping on trends because they sound appealing or promise miracle results. Maybe you’re looking for something to help with sleep quality, joint pain, or energy levels during afternoon crashes, perhaps getting a medical card for cannabis or consulting with a sleep doctor could help in those cases.
Having such a target, but not a dogma, helps you evaluate claims more critically and avoid getting distracted by supplements or treatments that promise to fix everything at once, which is usually a sign that they probably don’t fix anything particularly well at all.
