Review: Essence I Love Extreme Crazy Volume Mascara

I’ve been using Essence’s I Love Extreme Crazy Volume Mascara for over a month now so I’ve got a couple more weeks with it. You may recall, I mentioned before that I typically toss my mascaras every 2 months. I have very mixed feelings about this mascara. Read on to find out why!

First, I need to say that the mascara definitely lives up to its name. Well, I’m not sure it produces “extreme, crazy” volume, but it does volumize my lashes and makes them appear fuller which is something I love. I’m always a fan of mascaras that can not only hold the curl, but make my lashes appear thicker and fuller. Length is nice, but if I had to pick and choose, I’d pick volume over length.

So far so good, right? Now, the issue is the wand is so big and the product is so gloppy (is that a word?) that it becomes quite messy.

The wand is large and it is always loaded up with way too much product. I end up spending time scraping off all the excess product onto the sides of the mascara tube and trust me, it’s a lot! Because there is just so much product and it’s so thick, upon first application it makes me lashes feel very wet and heavy. You know that feeling when your lashes feel heavy because there is just so much product on them? It’s that feeling. Luckily, the feeling does go away after a few minutes, once the mascara has had time to dry. Another reason I find the product messy is because the combination of the large wand and copious amount of mascara on the wand, I find that I almost always end up with some mascara on my eyelid which I then have to remove with a q-tip. Obviously, not a big deal, but still it takes an extra minute which isn’t ideal when I’m rushing in the morning.

So you can see why I have mixed feelings about the mascara. I love the volume and fullness it gives my lashes, but I really don’t like how messy it is due to the wand and amount of product that comes out. The mascara retails for $4.99 at Ulta so it is very affordable. Yes, it sorta lives up to its name, but you have to decide whether the volume and price is worth the time you’ll spend removing all the excess product and cleaning up your eye area. For me, it’s a toss up. There are a lot of other mascaras both drugstore and high-end that I know I enjoy and a ton left for me to still explore that probably wouldn’t require as much maintenance, however I do like the volume this one gives me so I really can’t say whether I’d repurchase or not!
