Holiday Lunch at 1906

How was everyone’s first week of 2017? I hope you got the year off to a good start! When I went to Longwood Gardens at the very end of 2016, my family and I ate lunch at the fine dining restaurant on the premises, 1906. I ate there back in June during my first visit to the gardens and loved it so much that I had to get a reservation to go back this time around, especially to try out their winter/holiday menu. I really wanted to go for dinner since I went for lunch last time and because the Yuletide Menu is dinner only, but the restaurant was booked up until 2 weeks later!

Nonetheless, I went for lunch and it was amazingly delicious as expected! Presentation was beautiful as it was last time, tasted good, and service was excellent.

The meal started out with individual little flower pots of brioche bread. Scrumptious!

For my appetizer, I ordered the Smoked Salmon Mousse. The mousse was tasty and came in the cutest mason jar with crostini, crudite, and maille mustard served on a wooden board. The spread was gorgeous and the salmon mousse on the crostini was really good. The carrots were so sweet and tasty too!

For my entree I ordered the Winter Squash Risotto. As a big fan of risotto, I often order it when it’s on a menu so I couldn’t pass this up. It was served with salsify, roasted Kennett Square mushrooms (the town Longwood Gardens is in is Kennett Square so the mushrooms were local!), leeks, and cranberry. There was the option to add chicken, Maine lobster tail, or rock shrimp. I went with the shrimp. The risotto was delightfully warm and filling on a cold winter’s day.

For dessert, I got the Yule Log which was a mini yule log made with flourless chocolate cake, hazelnut butter cream, and hazelnuts. So good and surprisingly light!

I love that so much of the food served there are right from the premises. I overheard one of the servers telling people that some of the wood used for presentation purposes comes from fallen trees right in the gardens. I also overheard another server telling their table that if you want any recipe you can just leave your email address with the chef and he will email the recipe! How cool!

Another delicious meal and experience at 1906. I hope to eventually get there for dinner one day!
